SMJ's specific patented application for our innovative electromagnetic linear motor technology is to actuate the intake and exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine in order to achieve Infinite Variable Valve Timing, (IVVT). The result of IVVT is Perfect Combustion within each engine cylinder.
Variable Valve Timing (VVT), the ability to change camshaft characteristics such as lift and duration, has long been recognized as a method to increase performance while decreasing emissions in internal combustion engines.
Many manufacturers are using available technology to achieve some level of VVT. However, the attempts are limited with respect to degrees of timing change, which limits improvements, due to the continued used of camshaft technology.
The SMJ solution uses no camshaft nor associated parts. Instead, IVVT is achieved using our proprietary electromagnetic linear motors and control algorithm to perfectly capture each combustion event. Further efficiency improvements are achieved by eliminating parasitic losses associated with valve springs, rubbing cam followers, and other elements within the rotating group.
Being programmable, for the first time in history, the behavior of the valve opening and closing events is completely dynamic. It is no longer dictated by a pre-determined camshaft profile and is instead, based upon feedback from sensors to determine current engine operating requirements.
